The memory filled Josie's heart, and her throat thickened with love. D.J.'s face replaced her husband's. Though it was hard on Josie not to reveal her identity, she would do whatever was necessary to have some time with her daughter.
"No. It's never easy. But love's worth all the trouble." She opened her eyes and found herself once again above D.J.'s bed. "I'll make sure you get your chance, D.J. I promise."

The phone shrilled, bringing D.J. out of a heavy sleep. She sat straight up in bed, her heart beating a painful cadence of fear.
"Everything's all right, dear." Josie's voice came from above the bed. "Just answer the phone."
D.J. took a second to glare at the interloper, then fumbled on her bedside table for the telephone.
"Sweet pea?" The volume of Lou's voice made D.J. wince.
"Yeah, Lou. I'm here. What's up?"
"Your friend, McCall. He's in Lakeview Hospital."
The last vestiges of sleep fled D.J.'s mind, and she threw her legs over the edge of the bed and stood up. "What happened?"
"Someone broke into his house last night. Trashed the place pretty good. He must have walked in on them. They hit him over the head and took off."
"Is he all right?"
"I brought him down here to get checked over. The doctor says he's got a mild concussion, but he'll live. Anyway, McCall said he told you he'd meet you at eight. Maybe you can just come down to the hos-
